Risk Analysis Using Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis for Transmission Network Assets

In this paper, we apply the Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) approach to criticality risk analysis of efficiency, safety/reliability, environment, financial criteria high voltage transmission line. efficiency analysis, weighting-scoring method analytical hierarchy process are applied obtain line renovation index, which is interpreted as severity. The safety/reliability severity relates system impacts caused by failure equipment system. environmental takes social pollution into consideration. involves cost spare parts maintenance costs, lines. Twenty practical lines in Thailand with actual data for 115, 230, 500 kV were studied. components divided eight including conductor, conductor accessories, insulator, steel structure, foundation, lightning protection system, tower right-of-way. analyzed plotted matrices based on four criteria. This matrix presented at different levels very low, medium, risk, represented color bands: green, yellow, orange, red, respectively. results show that three 115 first priority short-term reconstruction planning because their unacceptable condition terms financing. Recommendations strategy mitigation proposed utility according utility’s criticality. Ultimately, can be effectively managed higher reliability, a lower failure, maintenance.
